Hi, my name is Sam Hobbs and I am an Artist Teacher. I am Head of Art in a local secondary school and I also work with trainee art teachers at the University of Brighton. My degree is in textile design and before training to teach I owned a shop in the North Laine area of Brighton sourcing and designing fair trade clothing and accessories.
I make my own artwork alongside teaching and enjoy working in a sketchbook to generate new ideas. This is how I discovered miniature collage. Three years ago, a friend gave me a huge bag of postage stamps and I used some of them to create mini seascapes in my sketchbook. I found that I loved bringing new life and meaning to these tiny, beautiful and redundant items.
Growing up near the North East coast, I am inspired by seascapes both real and imagined. I am drawn to forgotten worlds and the mythical, where the possibility of magic lies. I seek out old atlases, maps and postage stamps to use in my work, sometimes combining collage techniques with printmaking and drawing.
I am available for commission.
