Jude Evans

I’m inspired by the coastal landscape of my home town, Worthing. I feel at home by the sea and enjoy the charm of seaside towns. I’ve known this bit of the south coast for years and years, it’s part of my history and my identity. Down on the beach you can feel the forces of nature and its natural rhythms. I like the tension between order and chaos, organic forms and straight lines, wild nature and man-made objects. I’m interested in how the mood of a place changes according to weather conditions, times of day and seasons.
My creative process begins with looking around for inspiration and taking photos, then I make sketchbook studies to develop an idea before starting to work on a new canvas, seeing something emerge, losing myself and ending up with something that pleases me. Being a maker and not just a consumer is important to me and creativity gives meaning to my life.
I work in acrylics on canvas and use a limited palette, building up layers of paint using a variety of brushes and other tools, and adding graphic marks in pencil or crayon.

I studied art history for my degree, and I did a foundation year at Chelsea College of Art. I lived in London for many years and worked at the National Gallery and the Art Fund. Since returning to Worthing in 2015, I’ve been developing my art practice and getting involved in the local art scene.

As a member of the Adur Art Collective, I exhibited at Skyway Gallery in Shoreham-by-Sea, and I’ve shown work in Worthing Artists Open Houses.
