Sandscapes

Jude Evans

15th July– 20th July

Local artist Jude Evans has known the beaches of Worthing for years and years, they are part of her history and her identity. Her exhibition Sandscapes is the result of a two-year project and showcases a series of abstract landscape paintings of the beach at low tide.

The work celebrates the forces of nature and its natural rhythms, and explores the tension between order and chaos, organic forms and straight lines. In these paintings, Jude strives to convey a sense of freedom with vast expanses of sand, big skies and the dead-straight line of the distant horizon. There is an element of autobiography in Jude’s paintings, they suggest memories of her seaside childhood, of lost people and places, and her nostalgia for an imagined past.

Alongside the paintings, Jude presents Tide Sculptures, a collection of photographs that focus on Worthing’s sea defences eroded by natural forces into beautiful sculptural forms as they decay and eventually disappear.
