Lulu Willis

20th May - 15th June

I work with largely recycled and repurposed items to make mechanical automata, Collage, bejeweled mirrors and whatever piques my interest. My work often has a maximalist vintage look.

My name is Lulu Willis, I am an ex NHS worker and carer to a disabled adult son. I have always been creative, but after a period of very poor, stress related, mental health, I began to make art in earnest as a therapeutic tool. During the lock-down period , I was picked to be on series 2 of ‘Grayson Perry’s art club’ with a piece called Warrior Carer . This depicted some of the difficulties and frustrations of dealing with outside agencies to get help as a carer.
My work is often influenced by religious imagery. The collages can be versions of Greek icons, where a modern icon such as David Bowie or Dolly Parton replaces the saint. I create bejeweled pots which are reminiscent of the Ciboria used during the Catholic Mass. I am not particularly religious but the beauty and imagery of churches and other religious buildings is inspiring to me.
I strongly believe the meditative process of creating art is incredibly beneficial to mental health
